Ration Card Portability: Important news is coming from the Food Ministry regarding Ration Card. The Food Ministry has said that this year there has been an increase in ration card portability across India. This can be gauged from the fact that in the first 11 months of the year 2023, 28 crore transactions regarding food grains have been registered from ration shops.

Under the ration card ‘portability’, the concerned person can use it as before even if he moves from one state to another. ‘Portability’ under One Country, One Ration Card (ONORC) was launched in four states in August 2019. But later the ‘portability’ system within the state and across other states was implemented in all 28 states and eight union territories.

Who got the benefit?

One Country, One Ration Card aims to provide access to poor beneficiaries, especially migrants, under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) at any e-POS enabled ration shops in the country with Aadhaar authentication at the time of offtake of food grains through biometrics or portability. Had to be made eligible to avail the benefits of ration.

More than 80 lakh tonnes of ration distributed

Apart from this, their family members at home can also avail the requirement of food grains on the same ration card. The Food Ministry has said in a statement that in the 11 months of 2023, 28 crore transactions were done for purchasing food grains after portability of ration cards. Under this, more than 80 lakh tonnes of ration has been distributed including inter-state and inter-state portability transactions of NFSA and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).

More than 2.5 crore ‘portability’ transactions

Let us tell you that currently, more than 2.5 crore ‘Portability’ transactions are being registered every month under PMGKAY food grain distribution. Since the launch of the ONORC scheme in August 2019, more than 125 crore portability transactions have been recorded in the country. Through this, more than 241 lakh tonnes of food grains have been distributed. This includes taking food grains from ration shops within the state and in other states.
