IMD Heatwave Alert: IMD Director General Dr Mrityunjay Mahapatra today held a press conference on the updated Seasonal Outlook for Hot Weather Season (April to June) 2024 and Monthly Outlook for April 2024 for rainfall and temperature.

Director General of Meteorological Department (IMD) Dr Mrityunjay Mahapatra today held a press conference on the updated seasonal outlook for hot weather season (April to June) 2024, monthly outlook for rainfall and temperature for April 2024. IMD says that temperatures are expected to be above normal in most parts of the country during April-June. IMD has predicted severe heat from April to June this year.

According to IMD, there is a possibility of heatwave for 10-20 days in April-June and El Nino conditions will continue till May. IMD says that the maximum temperature in April this year is expected to be 38 to 42 degrees Celsius. Whereas in the month of May the temperature is expected to be between 42 to 44 degrees Celsius. IMD said that in February this year, the maximum temperature in South India was 34 to 38 degrees Celsius.

El Nino conditions will persist in May

Director General of Meteorology M Mahapatra said that except some areas of Madhya Pradesh, there is no heat wave warning for the wheat producing areas for the next 7 days. Heat wave is not expected in UP and Punjab, which are wheat producing states. IMD said that El Nino conditions will persist in April and May. There is a possibility of a higher than normal heat wave in Central India, adjacent northern plains and South India in April 2024. According to IMD, in April 2024, there is a possibility of heat wave lasting 2 to 8 days in these areas compared to the normal 1-3 days.

It will be hot during voting

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “We will have to face extreme weather conditions during the elections. With almost a billion people voting, it will be difficult for all of us due to extreme weather conditions. Therefore we have to be prepared. The country must take appropriate precautionary measures to ensure that we participate in the electoral process while preparing for extreme weather conditions.
