Tata Group company signs big deal to set up EV charging station

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEM) has signed a non-binding MoU with Shell India Markets Private Limited (SIMPL) for cooperation in setting up public charging stations across India.

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEM) has signed a non-binding MoU with Shell India Markets Private Limited (SIMPL) for cooperation in setting up public charging stations across India. With this step, both the companies aim to address challenges like range anxiety and charging accessibility, which are the biggest hurdles people face in adopting electric vehicles. The Tata Group subsidiary said in a statement that the move will take advantage of Shell’s large fuel station network.

TPEM, a leader in India’s EV landscape and a subsidiary of Tata Group, holds a market share of 71 per cent in the electric passenger vehicle segment. TPEM launched its first EV-exclusive store in Gurugram. It has also worked with several charge point operators to develop India’s charging infrastructure.

What does SIMPL do?

SIMPL, a subsidiary of global energy giant Shell, leverages expertise in energy solutions and infrastructure development. Shell EV recharge locations provide ultra-fast charging with 98%-99% charger uptime.

Companies will set up a strong network

Under this agreement, TPEM and SIMPL want to build a strong network of public charging stations strategically located in urban centres, highways and major transport hubs. These charging stations will provide fast charging capabilities, allowing EV users to recharge their vehicles in a convenient and efficient manner, enhancing the overall EV ownership experience.

Under this partnership, the companies also aim to encourage more and more people in the country to adopt electric vehicles. TPEM said that they will also consider starting convenient payment systems and loyalty programs.

Big step for renewable energy

This partnership is also expected to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the charging infrastructure, which will further strengthen the sustainability of electric mobility. By using clean energy sources like solar and wind energy, charging stations can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to India’s renewable energy targets.
