A huge earthquake occurred in Taiwan. According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, this morning. The epicenter was located at a depth of only 34.8 km, 18 km away from the city of Hualien. It is believed to be the biggest earthquake in Taiwan’s history in the past 25 years. Due to the earthquake, warnings were issued that tsunami waves of up to 10 feet could create havoc in Japan’s southern island of Okinawa and the southern Philippines. It seems that tsunami waves have already hit Miyako and Yayama islands.
Due to the earthquake, many huge buildings in Taiwan collapsed and the foundations of some buildings were shaken. Speed train services have been stopped. Flights are cancelled. People are running out of underground railway stations. A tsunami warning was issued as the epicenter was 15.5 kilometers deep in the Pacific Ocean. A 5 plus warning was issued in Ilan County and Miaoli County in northeastern Taiwan. A similar level of warning has also been issued in Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taiwan City, Hsinchu City and Taichung. Officials asked the locals to move to higher areas.
It is expected that heavy loss of life and property may have occurred. But the details are not yet known. In 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake killed 2400 people. Efforts are being made to evacuate the people in some buildings as they are at a dangerous level.
