Don’t fall into the cashback trap
A recent survey revealed that many customers are attracted towards online platforms in the name of cashback, subscription rewards, but do not pay after joining the platform or purchasing the product. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has identified 13 types of patterns, misleading advertisements or unfair trade practices that violate consumer rights. These include hidden charges, subscription cashback etc.
These 13 ways companies cheat
The 13 types of dark patterns identified by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) include false requirements, non-disclosure, non-verification, coercion, subscription traps, etc. According to the survey of local circles in which more than 45,000 people participated, more than 52 percent of the people in the survey said that they are facing problems like cashback and other charges. 67 percent of consumers encountered subscription traps. In the survey, many people said that they have not received the money despite many cashback offers.
The Government of India declared such practice illegal in December 2023. A fine was also imposed on such specimens. Attempts to manipulate or influence users through these patterns on online payment platforms will result in a fine of Rs. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has made it clear that a fine of Rs 10 lakh will be imposed.
