The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has warned mobile users to be alert for calls from foreign numbers starting with +92 on WhatsApp. According to a recent notification issued by the Ministry of Information, miscreants are threatening to make calls from numbers starting with +92, posing as government officials, threatening to disconnect their mobile numbers for involvement in illegal activities. Users are advised not to disclose any information if they receive calls from such numbers. In this context, let’s know more details about the warnings given to the users of DOT on foreign numbers.

DoT said cybercriminals are trying to threaten/steal personal information through such calls to commit cyber-crime/financial fraud. It is advised to be cautious, especially as no legal entity will ask for personal details over the phone. Do not share any information. It warned that there has been a recent increase in reports of fraudulent calls impersonating government officials from the DoT, threatening to disconnect a mobile number or alleging illegal activities. Especially in recent times WhatsApp calls are coming from foreign numbers. Especially those starting with +92 (Pakistan code). Many reports reveal that scammers are trying to cheat citizens from these numbers.

Protection is like this

  • The DoT has asked people to report such fraudulent calls through the Report Suspected Fraud Communications facility on the Sanchar Sathi portal.
  • Proactive reporting helps DoT prevent misuse of telecom resources for cyber crimes and financial fraud.
  • In cases where people have already been victims of cybercrimes or financial frauds, the cyber-crime helpline is advised to report the incidents to 1930 or visit the official cybercrime portal.
  • Earlier this year, DOT sumoto blocked 1,500 callers, including international numbers, linked to cybercrime and threats. These measures are aimed at curbing misuse of telecom resources in view of rising financial frauds.
