For the first time, there may be increased anxiety regarding this, but by understanding the process and taking necessary steps, you will not face problems in E-Verification.

What is E-Verification of ITR?

E-Verification of Income Tax Return (ITR) is the process of electronically verifying the authenticity of the information provided in the ITR filed by the taxpayer. To simplify and speed up the verification process, e-Verification process was introduced by the Income Tax Department in place of the traditional system of sending physical copies of ITR-V (acknowledgment) to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC).

When a taxpayer files his ITR online through the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department, the return is processed, and if any discrepancy or additional verification is required, an e-Verification notice is issued. is done. The notice generally requires the taxpayer to verify his ITR electronically using one of the authorized methods provided by the department.

E-Verification methods include generating Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through net banking, bank ATM or Aadhaar OTP, digitally signing ITR using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), or creating a copy of ITR-V. May involve sending a signed physical copy. CPC These methods ensure identification of the taxpayer within the specified time frame. Validate the accuracy of file returns and complete the verification process without the need for physical documents.

Let us tell you, E-Verification is an important step in the process of filing ITR, because the Income Tax Department considers the return filed only after successful verification. Failure to comply with the e-Verification notice within the specified time may result in the ITR being treated as invalid or non-filed, leading to penalty and consequences as per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Aadhaar OTP to E-Verification

  • Log in to your Income Tax e-filing account.
  • Under the ‘e-File’ tab, select ‘Income Tax Return’ and then ‘e-Verified Return’.
  • If you do not have Aadhaar OTP, select the option ‘I would like to verify using OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar’.
  • Make sure that your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar and your PAN is linked to your Aadhaar number.
  • Tick the checkbox agreeing to validate your Aadhaar details and click on ‘Generate Aadhaar OTP’.
  • Enter the 6 digit OTP received on your registered mobile number and click on the ‘Verify’ button.
  • Your ITR will be verified upon successful submission. Note that OTP is valid for 15 minutes only.
